Welcome to my English 306 portfolio.
My name is Nitisha, and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Arizona.
This website is my online portfolio for my English 306 class, which focuses on new media writing. It is a collection of all my major assignments required for this class throughout the semester as well as a blog, which contains my responses to certain prompts given. These prompts included news articles, opinion pieces and my thoughts on certain assignments.
For this E-portfolio, I wanted to use the concept of a physical journey as a metaphor for the entire portfolio. More specifically, I wanted to compare my experience with this class with the stereotypical fantastical journeys. While I am a frequent reader of new media writing, I have never previously attempted to write specifically for new media. I have never thought of concepts such as non-logocentrism and hyperlinks. New media writing was like a foreign world to me.
At the start of the semester I was given a syllabus, which outlined all the major assignments I had to complete. I liken this to being given a map of a foreign land, knowing that I had to complete a journey to a specific point, with the blog entry being like a diary of my travels. The general direction I should be heading and the major landmarks I would pass are all symbolized on the map. While I had an idea of the overall direction, I did not know of the specific paths, detours and stops I would make. In some cases, like the digital story, I had no idea what the "landmarks" actually were until I reached them.
Please take the time to read this blog because the different assignments explore different facets of new media, which is something, at least in my experience, that does not get explored and analyzed very often. Most of us have spent hours in school, studying printed texts like newspaper articles, novels and scholarly texts. However, we are increasingly relying on new media as our source of information, which has its own conventions and style. This e-portfolio contains assignments that offer my take on some of the aspects of new media, with the perspective of someone who while regularly consumes the genre, has never previously attempted to analyze it and consciously attempt to adhere to the main stylistic conventions.
